Approximately 5.6 million workers in the U.S. are at risk of developing various types of illnesses due to their exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as the human immunodeficiency (HIV) and hepatitis B (HBV) viruses and other potentially infectious materials in the workplace. This standard practice instruction establishes uniform requirements to ensure that procedures to limit the spread of such hazards are implemented, evaluated, and that the proper hazard information is transmitted to all affected workers.
