Over-tensioning of belts can lead to shortened life for not only the belts, but also the sheaves and bearings of the motor and driven equipment. In some cases excess belt tension can result in motor shaft breakage. Unfortunately, the reaction to premature motor bearing failure is often to change the drive end bearing from a ball to a roller, to accommodate greater radial load due to belt pull.
