EASA maintains a database of over 250,000 three-phase motor windings which members can access with the newly released Motor Winding Workbench online application. This winding information has been contributed by EASA members over decades, and it continues to grow as members submit new data. Initially, data was submitted on 4x6 “winding cards” and stored on microfiche (micro images on film). The records were transferred to a computer database on CD in 2001 and incorporated into EASA Version 3 and Version 4 AC Motor Verification & Redesign software. The new Workbench online application also integrates the Reference Motor database with the verification and redesign functions. The Workbench application will transfer winding data directly to the Reference Motor database when members check the Reference submit box with the nameplate data in the app (top left of the original data entry display).

We can all look forward to a more robust Reference Motor database as members continue to submit data.

An important element of the Reference Motor database is that all motor data includes the motor manufacturer name. The manufacturer name adds authenticity and helps members understand the source of the data. Motor data that is submitted without a manufacturer name is filtered out. It is a challenge to match the manufacturer name submitted by members with authentic, properly spelled manufacturer names. Workbench maintains a list of authenticated names, and the list grows as new manufacturers are identified. To assist in that process, the list of authenticated names is available in a dropdown entry when a member enters a new motor. If a name is entered that is not on the list, the entry prompts the user to confirm if the name is properly spelled. Names are case and punctuation sensitive. Common misspellings are caught and automatically converted to the proper format i.e.,“Ebara” is automatically converted to “EBARA” and EMG to E.M.G. If an entered manufacturer name is not recognized, a prompt is displayed to verify the name is properly spelled:

If “Name is properly spelled” is checked, the new name may be added to the list. If “Manufacturer name is unknown” is checked, the motor is excluded from the Reference Motor database.

By automating the process to add new three-phase winding data to the Reference Motor database, the ability to grow the database is greatly enhanced. The manufacturer name selection list and common misspelling conversion help maintain the authenticity of the data and make searching for data more reliable. The diligence of members in providing complete and accurate data benefits all members as the database grows. Thank you to all members for doing your part.
