A high-quality standard doesn’t stop at the workbench. It’s how you treat the technician next to you, the customer with a unit down and the vendor on the phone. Hold every relationship in the building to the same standard you expect from a rebuilt gearbox: precision, honesty, and no shortcuts.

Remember that the most important decisions you make are who you hire, who you provide work for and who you source parts from. Surround yourself with people who can carry a high standard, and you will spend far less time enforcing one.

Every service center has a quality standard, whether anyone ever wrote it down or not. It isn’t the number on the poster in the break room or the line in the mission statement. It’s whatever your people watch you tolerate. In industrial equipment repair, that gap between the stated standard and the real one shows up fast: in a bearing that was “close enough,” a test run that got skipped because the schedule was tight, or a call to a customer that got put off a day too long.

Building a strong quality culture across a facility comes down to a handful of habits, and they start at the top.
