While maintenance teams increasingly source motors globally, assuming all inverter-rated motors perform similarly can lead to premature failures in converter-fed applications.

It focuses on IEC motor standards and highlights the importance of Impulse Voltage Insulation Class (IVIC), a rating that indicates how well a motor’s insulation system can withstand the fast-rising voltage pulses produced by modern converters. These voltage pulses create electrical stress on turn-to-turn, phase-to-phase, and phase-to-ground insulation, which can shorten motor life if the insulation system is not properly matched to the application.

IEC standards classify insulation systems and define four IVIC stress categories, A through D, based on permissible voltage overshoot and rise times. Applications with longer cable runs, regenerative braking, or higher voltage spikes require more robust insulation classes. Using a motor with an IVIC rating below the application’s requirements can result in winding damage and turn-to-turn shorts.
