La soldadura fuerte (brazing) es el proceso de soldadura más común en las conexiones de motores y generadores eléctricos de corriente alterna. Ya sea para conectar las bobinas del estator, unir conductores de rotor o reparar devanados de generadores hidroeléctricos, una soldadura fuerte bien ejecutada proporciona integridad eléctrica y resistencia mecánica excelentes. La soldadura fuerte consiste en unir dos o más metales fundiendo un metal de aporte que fluye hacia la junta por capilaridad. El metal de aporte tiene un punto de fusión inferior al del metal contiguo. La soldadura fuerte no funde la pieza de trabajo. La soldadura blanda (soldering) es similar a la soldadura fuerte, pero su punto de fusión es mucho menor. Además, la unión soldada no es tan resistente mecánicamente como la que se hace con soldadura fuerte.
Muchos fallos en la soldadura fuerte se deben a una serie de errores evitables. Una limpieza deficiente, un calentamiento inadecuado, holguras excesivas en la unión y el uso incorrecto del fundente son algunas de las causas más comunes de uniones débiles o poco fiables.
