Si bien las máquinas con refrigeración aire-aire (WP II o TEAAC) dominan el mercado, la refrigeración agua-aire es habitual en motores con potencias superiores a 5000 kW (6700 hp), en aquellos casos en los que el agua está fácilmente disponible, o en aplicaciones específicas, tales como los generadores eólicos. Los centros de servicio se encuentran con dos configuraciones: intercambiadores de calor con tubos externos e intercambiadores de calor integrales de camisa de agua.
