Los motores a prueba de explosiòn (XP y EX) constituyen un componente integral y obligatorio para garantizar la seguridad en ubicaciones peligrosas que contienen gases inflamables, vapores o polvo combustible. Prevenir que una chispa, llama o explosión interna escape del motor y entre en contacto con el aire circundante es un requisito indispensable para obtener la certificación de entidades como Underwriters Laboratory (UL), la Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) o la Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Una chispa, llama o explosión en una ubicación peligrosa podría desencadenar una explosión de mayor magnitud o una serie de explosiones. 

Existen sistemas de protección para limitar las temperaturas de la superficie externa de los motores pertenecientes a la Clase I, Grupo C o D, y a la Clase II, Grupo E, F o G. Uno de ellos es un dispositivo térmico conectado al circuito de control.
