Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle Authors: Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA
Stressors vs. Stress The authors distinguish between:
Even when a stressor disappears, the stress response often remains active, which can lead to burnout.
Complete the Stress Cycle Your body needs a signal that the threat is over. Effective ways to complete the stress cycle include:
Simply solving a problem does not necessarily end the stress response.
Burnout Is Not a Personal Failure Burnout is often the result of chronic stress and unrealistic expectations, not weakness or lack of effort. The authors emphasize that many societal structures contribute to burnout.
"Human Giver Syndrome" A major theme is that many women are conditioned to put others' needs before their own. This constant emotional labor and self-sacrifice can lead to exhaustion and resentment.
The Importance of Connection Strong relationships are one of the best protections against burnout. Feeling seen, supported, and understood helps regulate stress and build resilience.
Rest Is Essential The book argues that rest is not a reward for productivity. It is a biological necessity. Adequate sleep, relaxation, and self-compassion are critical for long-term well-being.
Main Takeaway Burnout happens when stress accumulates without being fully processed. Rather than trying to "work harder" or "manage time better," focus on completing the stress cycle, building supportive relationships, setting healthy boundaries, and giving yourself permission to rest.
One-sentence summary: To overcome burnout, don't just eliminate stressors. Help your body finish the stress response through movement, connection, self-compassion, and rest

If you have not received confirmation of your registration from EASA Headquarters, be sure to call EASA before traveling to the seminar site.
EASA reserves the right to provide a substitute instructor if the scheduled presenter is not available due to unforeseen circumstances.
